ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಬಂಗಾಳದ ರಸಿಕ ಚಂದ್ರ ಮಂಡಲ್ 1988ರ ಕೊಲೆ ಪ್ರಕರಣದ ಆರೋಪಿಯಾಗಿ ಜೈಲು ಸೇರಿದ್ದರು. ತನಿಖೆಯ ನಂತರ ಕೋರ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ವಿರುದ್ಧದ ಆರೋಪ ಸಾಬೀತಾಗಿ 1994ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜೀವಾವಧಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ಗುರಿಯಾದರು. ಅವರನ್ನು ಪೊಲೀಸರು ಬಂಧಿಸಿ ಸೆರೆಮನೆಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದರು. ಆಗ ಅವರಿಗೆ 68 ವರ್ಷ ವಯಸ್ಸಾಗಿತ್ತು.
ಈ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಅವರು ಕಲ್ಕತ್ತಾ ಹೈಕೋರ್ಟ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೇಲ್ಮನವಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದರು. 2018ರಲ್ಲಿ ಈಅರ್ಜಿಯನ್ನು ಹೈಕೋರ್ಟ್ ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಇದಾದ ನಂತರ ಅವರು ಸುಪ್ರೀಂ ಕೋರ್ಟ್ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲೇರಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಅವರಿಗೆ ನಿರಾಸೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.
ಕೊನೆಗೆ ರಸಿಕ ಚಂದ್ರ ಮಂಡಲ್ ಅವರು ತಮಗೆ 99 ವರ್ಷದವರಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ 2020 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಸುಪ್ರೀಂ ಕೋರ್ಟ್‌ಗೆ ಹೊಸ ಮನವಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು. ವೃದ್ಧಾಪ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯದ ಕಾರಣ ನೀಡಿ, ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯ ಅವಧಿಗೂ ಮೊದಲೇ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡುವಂತೆ ಮನವಿ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಅದರ ವಿಚಾರಣೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಬಾಕಿ ಇದೆ. ಇದರ ನಡುವೆ ಅವರು ಜಾಮೀನು ಕೋರಿ ಅರ್ಜಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದು ಅದನ್ನು ಕೋರ್ಟ್ ಮಾನ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿದೆ.
